Construction group Mace has welcomed a successful year across the Midlands as it looks forward to being part of the major infrastructure projects planned for the region.

Mace is working with Birmingham Airport to increase capacity by adding more aircraft stands and improving the retail offer and it recently won a place on the £650m University of Birmingham framework from which it will deliver the new School of Engineering which will accommodate the UK Railway Research Innovation Centre.

Simon Dale, director for the Midlands at Mace, said: “It has been a successful year for Mace, particularly with the growth of our team across the region. The growth of our Birmingham office is a testament to our exceptional track record of delivering high-quality, transformational projects across the region.

“Our focus now is to help turn the vision for a prosperous Midlands Engine into a reality by enabling major infrastructure projects, creating social value in our local communities and boosting productivity.”

Nationally the group doubled its profits to £23m on turnover just below £2bn.

Stephen Pycroft, executive chairman of Mace said: “The last year saw Mace return to a position of strength. Our cash balances are the highest they have ever been.

“By the end of 2017 we had secured over 80% of our work for 2018, and 30% of our company-wide turnover is now generated by our international businesses, something which will become hugely important to us as we diversify our business and continue our expansion plans.”

Mace has also publically revealed its 2022 Business Strategy, a five-year plan for the business which Mace said is designed to deliver “significant overseas growth, ongoing investment in innovation and productivity and the strengthening of our balance sheet”.

“The next five years will be some of the most exciting and transformational in Mace’s history,” said Mandy Willis, group director for corporate strategy at Mace.
