Law firm Bevan Brittan, based at Edmund Street in Birmingham, has reported a strong financial performance in 2017/18 – with revenues up for the sixth year in succession.

The firm reported turnover of £44m, up 12% from £39.2m while net profit was up 23% to £9.6m.

Adrian Dagnall, office senior partner in Birmingham, said: “Bevan Brittan has had a strong financial year supported by increased business activity nationally, and in particular here in the Midlands.

“We are benefiting from the delivery of a clear strategy to broaden our markets and range of clients; to invest in the talent across the firm; identify and attract new hires and to invest in new technology.”

During 2017/18, significant client appointments and activity across healthcare, housing, energy, education, local authority and the wider private sector in the Midlands included:

Advising Places for People & Urban Splash on the joint venture with Birmingham City Council and Canal & River Trust to deliver 1,150 new waterfront homes over 10 years at the Icknield Port Loop
Advising Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council on setting up their new independent children’s trust – one of the first in the country
Advising some the largest Housing Associations across the UK, including Places for People and Riverside Housing
Advising some of the major providers of independent health and social care providers in the UK, including Barchester Healthcare and BMI Healthcare

This year, key legal hires in Birmingham included partners Rebecca Pendlebury and Monica Macheng and senior associate Sarah Greenhalgh.

Fourteen lawyers were promoted within the firm (including six in the Midlands) and the number of trainees and apprentices was increased.

Bevan Brittan managing partner Duncan Weir said: “Bevan Brittan now has a balanced client portfolio, partnering a significant number of local authorities and NHS and independent health and social care providers across England and Wales, a vibrant housing practice and we now advise more than 300 businesses. The private sector now represents over a quarter of our total revenues.

“Strategically, to sustain this level of growth, we will continue to invest in our future legal talent both in the Midlands and nationally to maintain our high standards of client advice.”
