Contractor hands over £7m sports campus

Morgan Sindall Construction has completed a £7m contract at Tile Cross Academy in Birmingham, delivering modern sporting facilities for the school’s 600 pupils.

Working in partnership with consultant Acivico, through the Constructing West Midlands (CWM) framework, the contractor has built a curved two-storey 7,400 sq ft sports hall, which also accommodates additional specialist art, graphics and music teaching spaces on the upper level.

The four court sports hall, built to Sport England requirements, is configured for basketball, badminton, trampolining, football, and cricket. Local residents will be able to use the facilities outside of school hours.

Alongside the main hall, Morgan Sindall Construction has installed two floodlit 3G multi-use games area pitches (MUGA).

The site team has also re-clad the school’s existing science block and refurbished its interior.

Construction work began in July 2018 and has been completed five weeks ahead of schedule.

Dave Kelly, CWM framework manager at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “Providing pupils with modern facilities to pursue sports and active lifestyles has a very clear positive impact on educational attainment. It’s no surprise that forward-thinking schools across the Midlands are prioritising this kind of investment.

“This has been a great project to deliver and the Washwood Heath Multi Academy Trust’s decision to procure the scheme through the CWM framework has streamlined the whole process, enabling us to complete the work well ahead of schedule.”
