Work begins on affordable housing schemes in Coventry

Construction has started on 53 new homes in Coventry as part of a drive to increase the level of affordable housing in the city.

The schemes, which are being delivered for local housing association Citizen, will see new homes being built at Almond Tree Avenue, Everdon Road and Clifton Street.

Work on all sites were due to begin in March 2020, however coronavirus restrictions and concerns around the health and safety of those on-site meant that groundwork was delayed until July 2020.

Situated north of the city centre close to parks and shopping facilities, Almond Tree Avenue will deliver 36 mixed-tenure homes for local people and families, with a mix of two and three-bedroom semi-detached and terrace properties built on open land.

The £3.6m development is part of wider transformation projects in the city, which will see the reinvention of the Riley Square and Bell Green district centre.

On nearby Everdon Road, Seddon is on site building six new homes for affordable rent on brownfield land, which was once home to a block of low-rise flats (since demolished), and on Clifton Street work on 11 new-build homes for affordable rent has also commenced.

The team has been making significant progress to the groundwork on both sites for the past couple of months, with the bricks now being laid on the first plots.

All developments expected to complete in summer 2021.

Rob Moore, business unit director at Seddon, said: “All three of these vital developments are part of the bigger picture for the regeneration of Coventry. It’s great to be part of three further projects in the Midlands that will truly benefit local people and the community.

“Our aim is to help Citizen achieve its goal to increase the supply of affordable homes in the Midlands region. Despite a few initial delays, we’re powering on with works to the sites and we’re really pleased with the progress so far.”

Executive director of development at Citizen, Nick Byrne, said: “We’re pleased to see work starting at these three sites in Coventry despite an unusual start to the year with the outbreak of Covid 19.

“When completed the homes will provide affordable homes for people living in Coventry. We are looking forward to seeing these sites progress over the next year.”

The schemes are the latest to be delivered by Seddon for Citizen, including the recent Coventry Four Sites development, where 45 new homes were built for affordable rent and shared ownership.

Seddon has also previously completed external improvement works to 40 occupied one-bedroom bungalows for the elderly on the Everdon Road site.
