Construction of £8m care home on schedule

Construction of an £8m care home in Great Malvern is on schedule for completion by the end of June.

Work has been underway on the state-of-the-art private care home for almost a year.

The building sits on the site of the disused Malvern Community Hospital in Lansdowne Crescent.

Declan Sheehan, contracts manager at specialist nursing home contractor Lawrence Baker, which is undertaking the project, said: “This is a fantastic-looking well-constructed building, and thanks to the hard work and skills of the construction team, we’ve remained on schedule despite the challenges of the past year. The fact that we’ve come through with not one Covid case speaks volumes about how well everyone adhered to the infection control measures too.

“The internal build is going very well now – and we don’t anticipate any problems so completion is on course for the end of June – hopefully just as the final few pandemic restrictions are lifted.”

Designed for residential, nursing, and dementia care, Windsor Court for Maria Mallaband Care Group will provide 51-ensuite rooms, lounges restaurants, communal areas, along with two gardens across an upper and lower level. In addition, there will be a bistro and bar, hair salon, and eight-seat cinema open to the community as well as residents.

The new care home will also create jobs for up to 75 members of staff, including carers, nurses and administrators.

Annelli Chatfield from Maria Mallaband Care Group said: “We appreciate that this is a sensitive site, and many local people were saddened to see the old hospital building go. But we hope this attractive and sensitively designed building is a welcome addition that will not only help meet care needs locally, but add to the vibrancy of this community too.

“Everyone involved has worked with enormous care and attention to detail to make sure Windsor Court is in keeping with its very special location, and we are delighted by the fantastic results achieved by the highly skilled teams at Lawrence Baker.”
