Consultation starts on plans for former Sainsbury’s site

A consultation is underway on plans for the regeneration of a site once occupied by Sainsbury’s which would deliver student accommodation and retail space.

The Galliard Apsley Partnership is seeking views on the proposed development at land bounded by Chapel Lane, Harborne Lane and Bristol Road, Selly Oak.

The 1.32 hectare site has been vacant since Sainsbury’s supermarket left and the building has approval from Birmingham City Council for its demolition.

The plans include around 850 purpose-built student units, including studio apartments, more than 10,000 sq ft of medical provision and close to 14,000 sq ft of retail/commercial space at ground floor levels.

During 18 July and 1 August, formal community consultation is being carried out.

A community consultation drop-in event is being held at Sense Touchbase Pears on 25 July between 12:00 and 19:00.

Any comments made will be considered before a formal planning submission and included within a statement of community involvement submitted to Birmingham City Council as part of the planning submission.
