Green light for regeneration of Newcastle-under-Lyme

Capital&Centric has secured planning permission for its major regeneration of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The developer proposed three applications to transform the former York Place shopping centre, Midway Car Park, and Ryecroft into a mixed-use scheme.

Plans include more than 300 homes and 11,150 sq ft of space for businesses across the three locations, which includes repurposing much of the existing fabric of the shopping centre and Midway car park.

A search is underway to find a contractor to deliver the schemes, and work is already taking place to dismantle the shopping arcade and prepare the site for the work to start.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council gave the nod to spend almost £85m on the projects. The funding will be recouped by the council after selling the sites to Capital & Centric once complete. It also hopes to receive grant funding from Homes England.

When the council committed to the funding, John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital & Centric, said: “This is another huge step forward in our plans to give Newcastle-under-Lyme the glow up it deserves. It’s exciting overseeing three sites which, when all completed, will transform the town and make it more of a place people want to hang out in and live.

“The Council has been very supportive of our vision right from the start and we’re very grateful of their continued encouragement to help turn it into a reality.”

Gordon Mole, Chief Executive of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council added: “This marks another milestone in the exciting regeneration of Newcastle town centre.

“This major investment will change the look and feel of the town centre forever by bringing more people in to live, work and enjoy our excellent shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants.”
