Manufacturer fined after employee suffers broken arm at Warwickshire facility

A manufacturing company has been fined after an employee broke his arm while operating machinery at its Warwickshire facility.
Andrew Elson, a 54-year-old from Rugby, suffered multiple fractures to the ulna and radius in his right arm while working at Screening Consultancy and Supplies on November 25, 2022.
He was clearing debris from the bed of a radial arm drill at the company’s site on Somers Road in Rugby when his right hand got caught in the machine, resulting in six fractures that required surgery.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that Screening Consultancy and Supplies failed to conduct a proper risk assessment for this task and did not implement a safe working system.
Screening Consultancy and Supplies, located on Somers Road, Rugby, Warwickshire, pleaded guilty to violating Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
The company was fined £28,000 and ordered to pay costs of £3,616 at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on September 19, 2024.
HSE inspector Charlie Rowe said: “This prosecution highlights how employers should adequately assess the risks and then ensure they have a safe system of work in place for the operation of all machinery.”
