Bilston Outdoor Market set for £5m redevelopment

Bilston Market

Traders at Bilston Outdoor Market will temporarily relocate to facilitate improvements funded by £5.2m from the Government.

The redevelopment is set to begin on Thursday, October 24, 2024, and is expected to last around 12 months, during which the Indoor Market will continue to operate as normal.

Outdoor traders will move to Bert Turner Boulevard/High Street/Church Street, maintaining their regular hours: 8 am to 3 pm on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and 7 am to 1:30 pm for the Bilston Sunday Market and Car Boot.

The redevelopment is part of the Bilston Health & Regeneration Programme (HaRP), aimed at improving market visibility and pedestrian access from the nearby Bus/Metro station.

Some existing structures will be demolished to create a new facility that meets current and future needs while existing areas will be reconfigured to enhance the entrance to the indoor market.

A multi-use events space will also be developed.

Improvements will include new signage, a complete renewal of trader parking, a new taxi drop-off and bike hub next to the bus/metro interchange, upgraded public space landscaping, new retail units, public restrooms and a taller canopy to cover the stalls.

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for Resident Services, said: “We had good feedback from traders and residents through consultation and have developed attractive plans that
will enhance the Bilston market for everyone.

“While the improvement works are taking place, I would urge visitors to make themselves familiar with the temporary outdoor market and continue to support their local traders. It is important for our traditional local centres to flourish, and this scheme builds substantially on the investment already made in Bilston in recent
years.”
