Plans for 250 homes on historic Daimler car factory site
Plans have been submitted to build up to 250 homes on the site of the former Daimler car factory in Coventry.
Proposed for Sandy Lane Business Park, the new plans come after the withdrawal of a previous proposal nearly a year ago that aimed to build nearly twice as many homes on the seven-acre brownfield site.
With the new plans still featuring public spaces, the developer has reduced the building heights to a maximum of five storeys, down from the 12 storeys in the previous design. It also no longer includes flexible commercial or community spaces.
The project would centre around the Daimler Powerhouse, which is a historic building – the only part of the car factory to survive Second World War bombing – and was recently refurbished into a creative hub.
Daimler Powerhouse Creation Centre is run by Imagineer Productions and is home to four other resident creative arts companies: Highly Sprung, Media Mania, Open Theatre and Talking Birds.
Developers Rainier took over the project in January, following the shelving of earlier plans by the Wigley Group.
If approved, the existing buildings on the site, except for the Daimler Powerhouse, will be demolished.
