Wolverhampton council finalises £3m high street transformation plans

The City of Wolverhampton Council has finalised plans for a £3.3m transformation of Wednesfield High Street.

Funded by the UK Government, the project comes after public consultation, with feedback shaping the final designs.

The plans include upgraded paving, lighting, seating and greenery.

Pedestrian crossings will be enhanced, along with better access from key areas such as Bentley Bridge, Lichfield Road, and the new Wednesfield Technology Primary School.

Improvements to car park access and signage, particularly through Bealeys Fold, will make it easier for visitors to navigate to the heart of the High Street.

A new events and activity space will also be created, aiming to bring more community events and activities to the area, further enhancing its appeal as a destination for shopping, leisure, and local activities.

Work is expected to begin in spring 2025, once technical plans are completed and a contractor is appointed, with the upgrades set to finish by March 2026.

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, City of Wolverhampton Council cabinet member for resident services, said: “These works will bring the vibrancy back to Wednesfield High Street and surrounding areas, make it a more
welcoming place for all and will boost the local economy. We had a great response to our public consultation and have used the feedback to inform a set of proposals that maximise the funding that has been made available to us.

“We are now in a position to secure a contractor to deliver this important regeneration scheme for Wednesfield.”
