Grade II-listed Art Deco cinema hits the market for £1.5m

A Grade II-listed Art Deco cinema in Worcester is now up for sale with a price tag of £1.5m.

The former Northwick Cinema, located on Ombersley Road, spans 7,218 sq ft and is being marketed by property consultancy Fisher German.

Designed by Charles E. Wilford and opening in 1938, the building retains its original Art Deco features, including unique interior designs by John Alexander.

It is the last remaining unaltered example of his work, featuring relief plasterwork and 1930s fixtures.

After closing as a cinema in 1966, it served as a bingo hall and later an entertainment centre.

David and Helen Gray acquired the property in 2004, restoring it over 18 months to reopen as Grays of Worcester, a furniture store, which it remains today.

Lauren Allcoat, senior associate responsible for the sale, said: “This is a fantastic instruction for Fisher German with the property very much a local landmark. We have a vast amount of experience in selling similar properties over the years and are well-placed to sell this incredible building.

“Buildings like this do not often come onto the market, so this is a rare opportunity to purchase an architecturally significant building which is steeped in history, and we expect it to attract a strong amount of interest.”

Gray said: “It has been a wonderful venue to trade from, showing off our stock beautifully for many years, but it is getting a bit big for us now as David is 70 next year. We will be looking for a shop that is half the size, but we have no doubt we won’t find anywhere as fabulous as the Northwick.”
