Revised plans unveiled for world’s tallest energy-positive tower

Amended plans to deliver the world’s tallest multi-storey energy-positive development have been lodged in Birmingham’s Gas Street.
GNM Developments is proposing to redevelop 52 Gas Street and a tollhouse into a 29-storey tower with 249 co-living apartments, known as ‘The Narrowhouse’.
Designed by international architects Broadway Malyan, the £60m Narrowhouse scheme will include 43,800 sq ft of solar panels to power the building with more energy than it uses through renewable sources.
Plans were unveiled last April under the name Gather & Soul, but have been revised to add a further 14 storeys and 88 more co-living apartments
The additions mean the proposal includes more than 12,000 sq ft of communal space with kitchens, dining space, co-working space and a gym, alongside 4,800 sq ft of roof terraces on a podium and the tower. It also features 112 cycle spaces.
When plans were revealed in April last year, Gerald Manton, managing director at GNM said: “We are excited that our proposals will be a first, not only for Birmingham but for the entire UK. This will be the UK’s first multi-storey energy positive building.
“This will be part of Westside for a long time to come, and hopefully be an example of how buildings can be done differently. We also aim to make an enormous positive benefit to the lower end of Gas Street.
“This development is aligned with Birmingham’s Future City Plan which proposes ambitious sustainability targets that focus on reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy sources.”
