Take-off for skills academy at Birmingham Airport

BIRMINGHAM International Airport and Solihull College have joined forces to launch a new skills academy designed to support businesses and job hunters.

The Birmingham Airport Skills Academy (BASA), located next to the main terminal, will offer students the chance to study NVQs, apprenticeships, management and professional courses, IT training, languages and skills for life.

Caroline Spelman MP, who attended the opening ceremony, said: “It is great to see the development of such a unique facility, particularly during such challenging economic times.

“Up-skilling people can help businesses to succeed by providing able and motivated staff, which ultimately increases client retention and productivity.

“I am delighted to see birth of this facility and I believe it will provide an invaluable learning resource for the local area.”

The opening of BASA comes after seven years of partnership between Birmingham Airport and Solihull College, working on jobs and skills related projects.

“This marks yet another milestone in the unique partnership between the college and the airport and we look forward to seeing as many employees as possible taking advantage of the first class facilities available to them through this scheme,” said Brenda Sheils, the college principal.

“Staff development plays a huge part in the success of any organisation and our aim is to ensure that employers across the region make the most of the training incentives available to them and their employees.”
