Indian industrialist to outline future of steel sector

INCREASING demand by the global automotive industry for lighter cars and a need to make steel production more efficient will be discussed when a leading Indian industrialist addresses a seminar at WMG at the University of Warwick.

Tata Steel’s Dr Debashish Bhattacharjee has been invited to deliver the seminar to outline to Midlands businesses and researchers his vision for the future of the global steel industry

Dr Bhattacharjee is group director of Research Development and Technology at Tata Steel, as well as an industrial professor at the University of Warwick.

Tata Steel is the world’s second most geographically diversified steel producer and owner of Corus, formerly British Steel.

Dr Bhattacharjee is based in the Netherlands where he is leading the transformation of the research of Tata Steel Europe – earlier Corus RD&T – and Tata Steel India & Asia (Jamshedpur) into a global Tata Steel Research organisation.

He has also carried out post doctoral research at the Rolls Royce University Technology Centre in Cambridge and at the University of Birmingham.

Dr Bhattacharjee said customers in the automotive industry were making big demands on the steel sector because of the growing trend to produce lighter cars with increased crash safety. He said Tata Steel was looking to meet the demands by developing advanced high strength steel that combines high strength with high formability.

He said Tata Steel was also looking to increase the sustainability of the steelmaking process by using waste and by-product of processes in an innovative way. His company is also working on advanced technology for harvesting solar energy efficiently.

WMG chairman Professor Lord Bhattacharyya said the university was pleased to be staging the seminar.

“This is a free fantastic opportunity for Midlands business and researchers to gain crucial insights into the latest innovative steel product and process development underway in one the world’s leading global steel makers,” he said.

The seminar is free and takes place in WMG’s International Digital Laboratory at midday tomorrow. Businesses interested in attending can reserve a place by calling 024 765 73094.
