Internal safety review at UK Coal

DAW Mill colliery owner UK Coal has undergone a ‘critical safety impact review’ following the death of an employee at its Kellingley mine, the company said today.

In an interim management statement covering the period from June 26, the Doncaster-based business also said it was making progress with its three-year strategic recovery plan programme.

UK Coal said the recent incident at Kellingley in North Yorkshire, which left one man dead and another injured, had been a “stark reminder” of the importance of the company’s safety improvement plan.

The company said an investigation into the incident was nearing completion.

UK Coal said production in the third quarter of its financial year had been 1.8m tonnes, down from 2.2m tonnes in the same period last year.

Year to date production is 5.9m tonnes, which is in line with management expectations.

UK Coal said its mines in Kellingley and Thoresby, Nottinghamshire, continued to mine ahead of plan but the production had been hit at Daw Mill.

The group said net debt had been reduced to £68m, it was liaising with unions about changes to working practices and that its property arm, Harworth Estate, had made a £2m profit on property sales to date.
