Green light for quartet of transport schemes

A QUARTET of transport schemes in the West Midlands expected to create thousands of jobs has been given the go-ahead by the government.

Transport secretary Justine Greening confirmed the identities of 21 different projects across England worth a total of £854m, in addition to the 20 schemes announced in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement last month.

Chester Road, which joins Junction 5 of the M6, will undergo a £10.5m widening scheme to three lanes with bus priority and pedestrian improvements.

The £18.8m Coventry-Nuneaton Rail Upgrade, often referred to as ‘NUCKLE’, will see an enhanced rail service and two new stations on the route at the Ricoh Arena and Nuneaton.

Road improvements worth £25.9m will be carried out in the Darlaston area of Walsall including new bridges over the canal and railway, junction improvements and modifications to existing roads. The private sector is contributing £1m to the scheme.

Walsall Council, which is working with Centro on the project, said it believed the scheme would create around 2,000 new jobs.

Making up the group is the Worcester Transport Strategy which is a package of transport improvements in and around Worcester, including enhancements to Foregate Street and Malvern Link stations. The project is valued at £19.6m.
