Morgan Sindall wins lucrative Sellafield clean up contract

RUGBY construction firm, together with Arup, has won a lucrative joint venture contract at former nuclear plant Sellafield. The contract could be worth £1.1bn.

In October, Morgan Sindall Arup was given preferred bidder status for the Infrastructure Strategic Alliance (ISA) contract, which involves a range of projects as part of the clean up and decommissioning of the plant, including the construction of roads, drainage, electricity generation and general facilities such as canteens and a laundry.

The agreement will run for an initial five-year period but could be extended for a further ten years.

As part of the alliance both firms have agreed to set up base in West Cumbria and deliver an apprentice training scheme.

Owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority since 2005, the site is managed by Nuclear Management Partners, a consortium of US company URS, AMEC, and AREVA of France.

George Beveridge, Nuclear Management Partner’s deputy managing director for Sellafield, said: “We are very pleased to have reached this stage. Collaborative alliances such as the ISA represent a new way of operating for Sellafield Ltd but they represent industry best practice and we now look forward to realising the benefits that this new approach will bring to the site.

“I’m particularly pleased to see that much good work has already taken place in finding a West Cumbrian location for the workforce, engaging local partners in addressing training needs and understanding the needs of our local community. We’ve got off to a good start. It’s important that we now maintain that momentum.”

Morgan Sindall’s managing director Graham Shennan said: “The strong collaboration between all three parties has ensured that good progress has already been made since being selected as preferred delivery partner in October.

“We will continue to use our considerable experience and innovation, combined with our safe and sustainable focus, to ensure that we support Sellafield in delivering greater quality more efficiently throughout the lifetime of the ISA.”
