Bupa signs up for Pebble Mill scheme

PLANS have been announced to create a Bupa Care home at the 27 acre Pebble Mill site in Birmingham’s Edgbaston area.

Detailed plans for a 62 en-suite purpose-built care home that will provide a range of long and short-term care have been presented for local consultation in advance of a planning application to be made to Birmingham City Council.

Ralph Minott, director of development for Calthorpe Estates said that the proposals to occupy Plot 1 fronting Bristol Road at Pebble Mill are particularly interesting and exciting.

He said; “The Bupa Care homes provide outstanding residential and leisure care, including a cinema and hair salon and therapy rooms.

“When we secured overall planning consent for wider medical, science and health-related facilities in 2009, our intention was to attract world-class organisations that would create a centre of excellence the region could be proud of.”

It is hoped the Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry on Plots 2 and 3 will start construction this year following detailed planning approval, granted in December 2012.

Planning permission for a 161,400 sq ft private hospital was granted back in October 2009 on Plot 5 fronting Pebble Mill Road and a long lease was granted by Calthorpe Estates to Circle Health towards the end of 2011 on this plot. It is hoped that formal proposals will come forward for the private hospital over the coming 12 months, alongside other developments.

Pebble Mill is the former Birmingham home of the BBC.
