Library of Birmingham amongst projects competing for RICS awards

THE Library of Birmingham is one of the projects to be shortlisted for the RICS West Midlands Awards 2014.
It will be one of the first times the building – which has divided opinion in terms of its aesthetic qualities – will be judged by experts.
Winning accolades for design and construction would bring the library to the attention of a wider public and could be expected to provide a boost to the city’s tourism efforts.
The Park Side Building (BCU), The Flint Mill, Birmingham LGBT Health & Wellbeing Centre and Wyre Forest Crematorium are also up for awards.
Eight category winners and a Project of the Year will be selected from the 48 shortlisted entries to the awards. The winners from the building conservation, community benefit, design through innovation and the regeneration categories will then be invited to represent the West Midlands and compete against projects from across the rest of the UK, at the overall RICS Awards in London.
The 2013 Project of the Year title went to Air Traffic Control Facility, Birmingham Airport.
Jennifer Welch, director RICS North and Midlands, said: “The quality of entries received this year is truly outstanding and clearly demonstrates the fantastic work being carried out by property professionals.
“There is a wealth and variety of inspirational new projects and regenerated developments and I am sure it will be a challenging judging process.”
Judging for the awards will take place during the spring with the RICS West Midlands Awards ceremony being held at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre on May 15.
