Virgin Media urban cable rollout will create West Mids jobs

BROADBAND development plans announced by Virgin Media will see 1,400 jobs created locally, including 1,000 apprenticeships.

The firm has pledged to spend £3bn on Britain’s internet network. It will expand its superfast fibre network to four million extra homes in a five-year drive to improve internet speeds in towns and cities.

A total of 6,000 new jobs will be created nationally with a round 1,400 of those in this region.

The entire apprenticeship intake of 1,000 will be trained at Virgin’s Birmingham headquarters in Eagle Court on the Coventry Road in Sheldon.

They will be trained for a variety of roles, including technicians, planners and network engineers.

The Virgin Media facility at Sheldon was opened in October 2012.

The company, which is owned by US firm Liberty Global, has described the five-year plan as the single biggest investment in broadband digital infrastructure in the UK for more than a decade.
