RLB appointed on Kensington House project

PROPERTY and construction consultant Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) has been appointed by Birmingham Properties Group (BPG) to oversee the multi-million pound refurbishment of Kensington House in Birmingham city centre.

The existing six storey office building, located on Suffolk Queensway, will be converted into student accommodation, comprising 132 studio and one bed units.

Appointed as quantity surveyor and employer’s agent, Birmingham-based RLB is also providing CDMC and quality monitoring services on the project which has already started on-site.

Sara Boonham, partner at RLB, said: “The re-use of existing buildings is one of the property and regeneration industries’ biggest opportunities.

“In the city centre, where space is at a premium, it is an excellent way to create redevelopment opportunities and improve the urban landscape.

“As with any large-scale, city centre project, there are challenges with the refurbishment of Kensington House and we shall be tackling these head on, to ensure that we deliver a high quality project on time and on budget.

“Our focus and attention to detail has enabled us to work closely with our client and the consultant team to develop striking designs which will add to the area and which we’ll deliver by next summer.”

The design, by architects, Broadway Malyan, includes a new fenestration system and a gold cladding system with vertical fins.

It is anticipated that the works will be complete by third quarter 2015, enabling occupation for the 2015 student intake.
