Coventry law firm provides support for three good causes

A COVENTRY law firm has made a donation to supporting three local good causes.

Band Hatton Button has donated £12,500 to the Heart of England Community Foundation – one of the largest grant-making organisations across Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull.

The first round of funding, totalling £4,262, has been distributed between three good causes in the city, Coventry Mencap, which provides support to people with learning difficulties; the Sahara project, which supports the mental well-being of Asian elders and carers; and a parent and toddler group in Stoke Heath.

Band Hatton Button helped to raise the money by organising a number of staff fundraising activities as well as staging a charity ball in support of the Heart of England Community Foundation last year.

Mark Moseley, managing director at Band Hatton Button, said: “We are extremely pleased to have raised such a substantial amount for the Heart of England Community Foundation which has been great at identifying a wide range of projects in need of our support.

“All of the staff at Band Hatton Button were eager to support and get involved in our fundraising drive, which produced fantastic results, and we can’t wait to see how the other donations will benefit people across the community.”

Solicitor takes to the saddle to raise funds

A MIDLANDS solicitor’s 70-mile cycle commute to work is set to stand him in good stead as a trio from Wright Hassall prepare to take on the UK’s property professionals on foot, peddle and water to raise funds for charity.

Robin Canning is thought to have one of the longest cycle commutes in the Midlands – from his home in Tamworth to the Wright Hassall offices in Leamington.

He is taking part in the JLL Property Triathlon alongside colleagues Jeremy Hyde and Glynn Davis on July 3.

The trio, from the Leamington law firm’s development and construction team, will each swim 750m, cycle 21km and run 5km at the ninth annual property triathlon which takes place on and around Dorney Lake in Buckinghamshire.

The course used was one of the venues at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Canning said: “I’m chairman of a triathlon club and quite a few of the members cycle to work, but I’m pretty sure I’ve got the longest commute.”

The team will be raising funds for the Wright Hassall Charitable Trust, which supports charities in the local area or ones which members of staff at the firm are closely involved with.

Professionals raise £4,000 for Samaritans

COVENTRY professionals raised £4,000 for Coventry & District Samaritans, a sum that will enable the charity to operate its listening service for six weeks.

Professional services specialists donated £2,000 at Coventry & Warwickshire First FirstPro Awards, a sum then match funded by Barclays Bank.

“We’re very grateful for this incredibly generous donation,” said Roger Hughes, director of Coventry & District Samaritans.

“Samaritans operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year.  We are there for everyone, whether their distress is short lived or feels permanent, whether they feel there is no way out and whether they see the problems they face as large or small.

“It costs us £4.50 per hour to operate our service and so this donation will enable us to provide the support to people who need it for over six weeks.  It makes a big difference.”

Housing group raises £60,000 for Macmillan

A HOUSING and care provider in Birmingham has raised more than £60,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Housing & Care 21’s residents and staff organised everything from sponsored walks and fancy dress to coffee mornings and summer fetes to bring in the money for its official charity partner.

One staff member, retirement housing manager Martin Sawers, raised nearly £3,000 after setting himself the task of completing 25 separate challenges, including abseiling and  eating challenges, in memory of his dad Daniel who died of cancer.

The latest event saw staff at Housing & Care 21’s Tricorn House headquarters get busy baking to raise another £170.

Bruce Moore, chief executive of Housing & Care 21, which manages around 19,000 retirement and extra care apartments in the UK, said: “We are delighted to have raised such a fantastic total for what is an incredibly worthy cause.

“The credit must go to our residents and staff who have put in a tremendous amount of effort since we chose Macmillan Cancer Support as our official charity partner.”
