Garlick adds flavour to chamber board

A NEW appointment has added flavour to the board of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.

Sandra Garlick, of De Marco Hunter Solicitors – which has offices in Baginton and Kenilworth – was elected along with existing board members president Doug Squires, Amrik Bhabra and Sally Carrick at the chamber’s AGM.

Ms Garlick is the founding partner of De Marco Hunter Solicitors and plays an active role in the local business community.

She said: “As a local business owner, I am fully aware of the challenges faced by many business owners across the region. I am looking forward to working alongside other board members in the coming years to address the issues which affect our local business community.”

Mr Squires told the meeting, which was attended by around 80 chamber members, that he was pleased to have been re-elected.

Ahead of the official proceedings, Mr Squires spoke about the local economy and the challenges the region faces as it emerges from recession.

“We will have to adapt,” he said. “The chamber will be here to put forward the case for business and to ensure we get the best deal for businesses.

“Our policy work is key to that and our Quarterly Economic Survey – which feeds into the British Chambers of Commerce’s own survey – is used as a barometer of the economy by the Government and the Bank of England as they decide their economic policy.

“Recent surveys have suggested the economy is performing a little better – a fact borne out by my own engineering business – but there is definitely no room for complacency especially in this ever changing world.”

He also spoke about the chamber’s involvement in helping to set up a new Local Enterprise Partnership for the area.

“Our chief executive Louise Bennett has done a great deal of work with partners in the patch to put in a submission for Coventry and Warwickshire to central Government that, if ratified, would see business playing a major role in many key decisions for the area,” he said.
