Birmingham business journalists identify how small firms should promote themselves

SMALL businesses in Birmingham are being given exclusive access to some of the city’s leading business journalists during a special event at the new iCentrum digital innovation centre.

The event, which takes place on Monday (April 11), will feature a panel comprising: Duncan Tift, deputy editor, TheBusinessDesk.com, Kurt Jacobs, editor of Midlands Business Insider, former Birmingham Mail editor Steve Dyson, now editor of BQ Magazine and Richard Cockett, home business editor at The Economist.

The panel will discuss various issues based around helping businesses to promote themselves to the media and in turn, raise their profile among their customers and competitors.

The journalists will identify how they prefer to be contacted by businesses looking for coverage, what role social media plays in the way business stories are covered, whether press releases are important and whether or not small businesses need to employ a PR company when looking to promote themselves.

The Meet the Journalist event has been organised by small business champion Debbie Assinder, who heads up business support group Enterprise Nation in Birmingham.

The event, which starts at 6pm, will be hosted by journalist and Enterprise Nation’s own head of content Dan Martin.

Ms Assinder said: “Anyone running their own firm will understand how key PR is – and at the same time how challenging it can be to secure.”

The event takes place at the iCentrum building, Holt Street, Birmingham – next to the Innovation Birmingham campus.
