Long serving Birmingham businessman announces decision to retire

Peter Maskell, Group Chief Executive, BHSF

THE chief executive of Birmingham-based health benefits business, BHSF has announced his retirement.

Peter Maskell will step down from his role next August once his successor has been bedded in to the business.

His decision marks the end of 54-year association with the city’s financial services sector.

Following more than 34 years with Britannic Assurance, Mr Maskell joined BHSF as chief executive in 1999. He has overseen the growth of the business, from a provincial not-for-profit health insurer to a health and wellbeing business with national reach and turning over £43m.

In recent years he has overseen the development of the company’s successful occupational health business. In addition, the company’s portfolio of HR support products and employee benefits is now spread over 3,000 client businesses throughout the country.

During his career, Mr Maskell has served on the councils of the Chamber of Commerce, the West Midlands CBI and the Birmingham Insurance Institute, where he was President twice.

Jane Dale, chairman at BHSF said: “Peter has led the company through a period of tremendous growth over the last 17 years and along the way has built an outstanding management team, to support our continued success. During his time at BHSF, the business has accomplished a significant amount and this is testament to Peter’s long-serving commitment and dedication.”

Mr Maskell said: “Working at BHSF and helping the business to grow during my tenure has been one of the most rewarding professional experiences of my career. Today, BHSF is a diverse group with three businesses – health insurance, employee benefits and occupational health, and therefore has a solid operating position in the market to carry us forward.

“I am proud of everything we have achieved and I’m confident in the team’s ability to continue to grow BHSF following my retirement.”

A process has begun to find his successor and an appointment is expected in time for next summer.
