Anyone for Padel? Racquet sport venue relaunches

PLATFORM tennis – which is also known as padel – is swinging into Birmingham this month as the World Padel Club relaunches with a two-day extravaganza in Yardley this weekend.

Established in New York in 1928 as a sport suitable for winter, the racquet sport is a combination of tennis, badminton and squash.

Padel is a four-player sport which is similar to tennis and uses the same ball and scoring method, but instead the players use padels and the ball is allowed to bounce off any of the surrounding glass walls.

After a four week refurbishment, the free event, previously known as padel Nation, will be returning with state-of-the-art courts and new equipment.

Co-founder of the World Padel Club Birmingham Andrew Knox said: “The club looks incredible and we can’t wait to show it off. Whether you’re looking for sports or socialising, prizes or more information about padel, our open days will be the place to be.”

The event will be taking place at the UK’s only indoor padel facility outside London on October 22 and 23, inviting people to take a swing at padel and enjoy family-friendly activities all weekend.

Whilst the raquet sport will take centre court, its sister-sports Padball and footpool will also be available to play. Some more familiar sports will be making an appearance too, with football, tennis, dodgeball, and table tennis, all being played on the day too.
