Joint owner set to retire from construction firm after 20 years

WORCESTERSHIRE construction contractor Speller Metcalfe has announced that its joint owner, Andy Metcalfe is to retire from the business after more than 20 years with the company.

His retirement will be effective from April 1, 2018, where he will be relinquishing his ownership status and role heading up the building contractor’s Gloucester arm.

Mr Metcalfe will be succeeded in his Gloucester position by a new regional manager, who will start with the contractor in January 2017 to enable a successful transition and handover period.

“It is with great sadness that we will be saying goodbye to one of the two original founding members of Speller Metcalfe,” said Des O’Neill, group managing director.

“Andy is not only part of our foundation, he has successfully negotiated the growth of Speller Metcalfe alongside Steve Speller and our directors from a small local contractor into the national, £130m-turnover business we are today.”

Under Mr Metcalfe’s leadership, the Malvern-based company has been responsible for some award-winning projects, with one of his biggest achievements being the expansion into the wider South West region.

Mr Metcalfe said: “It’s a very difficult thing to leave the company both Steve and I started in his garage over 20 years ago.

“It has been a tremendous privilege to see Speller Metcalfe grow into the industry-leading contractor we are today and I know with the strong leadership and structure we have across the business, the team will continue on their successful journey.”

Steve Speller, his fellow joint owner, will become sole proprietor of the business while stepping into the role of company chairman, alongside Des O’Neill who will continue his role as group managing director.

Mr Speller said he and Mr Metcalfe met while working together at another contractor.

“Realising we had the ambition and the complementary skills to make a partnership work, we decided to try it on our own, and we’ve never looked back,” he said.

Gloucester’s new regional manager will be announced in January 2017.
