FTSE tipped to open lower as global markets lose ground

PRE-OPEN REPORT: Headline shares are tipped to open five to 10 points lower today, according to financial websites, following a weak showing on Wall Street last night and falls across Asian bourses this morning.

In the US last night, the Dow lost 12 points at 11,114, the Nasdaq Composite rose fourpoints at 2,507 and the S&P500 added a point at 1,184.

In Asia today, the Nikkei was last down 163 points at 9,203, while the Hang Seng ended the morning off 169 points at 23,042.

Crude oil traded at £51.45 ($81.98) a barrel on Nymex and gold settled at £841.06 ($1,340) an ounce.

In the corporate diary for the day, interim results are due from British Airways and Shire.

Final results are scheduled from Sabien Technology Group and trading statements are expected from Meggitt and WPP.

Eastern European Property Fund and JMorgan Mid Cap Inv Trust host their AGMs.
