SME In Brief: Life saving knicker donation; ‘Top’ pie contract awarded;
YORKSHIRE female entrepreneurs are helping underprivileged women in Africa by holding a charity collection with a difference.
Members of the York branch of Women In Rural Enterprise (WiRE) recently donated various items of underwear to the charity Knickers 4 Africa, which sends garments such as bras, pants and vests to African countries where new underwear is prohibitively expensive for most women.
Collection organiser and WiRE member Kathryn Rolfe, owner of Kathryn Rolfe Lingerie on Micklegate in York, said: “Here in the UK we take it for granted that we can buy new underwear for very little money these days, but in many African countries it’s a luxury that few people are able to afford.
“Apparently this is a real threat to personal safety, as unfortunately these women are much more likely to be attacked by men if they are not wearing a bra. Knickers 4 Africa helps by collecting donations of clean underwear and then distributing it to the places that need it most.”

YORKSHIRE Crisps, the South Yorkshire-based crisp company, has won a contract to supply Booths’ new Ripon store.
Booths in Ripon will initially stock the 50g bags with a view to rolling the product out to its other two Yorkshire stores in Ilkley and Settle.
Booths buyer Dave Smith said: “Booths is dedicated to promoting the best regional goods sourced from local suppliers. Yorkshire Crisps surpasses both criteria by using the finest quality potatoes, delivered from a local farm.”
Yorkshire Crisps Sales Director, Tim Wheatley added: “We aim to supply ethically astute supermarkets which share our values. We feel that Booths meets all our expectations and we are delighted they are listing an unprecedented six flavours.
“Our research reveals that more than 70% of Yorkshire residents prefer Yorkshire Crisps when compared with a national brand, and 97% of people surveyed said they would rather support local producers than large corporate businesses. We hope that Booths customers agree.”
