Sun shines on solar park plans as consent is given by Secretary of State

A Humber region solar park with enough capacity to power 45,000 to 60,000 homes a year has secured development consent.

The application for the Little Crow Solar Park has been granted consent by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Once installed, the solar park will have an intended design capacity of over 50MWp (megawatts peak).

The company behind the plans, INRG SOLAR (Little Crow) Ltd, is responsible for the development of 30 solar parks with a capacity of almost 300 megawatts across the United Kingdom.

Little Crow Solar Park will be 2.5km northwest of the village of Broughton and directly to the east of the British steelworks at Scunthorpe.

A spokesman for INRG SOLAR explained: “Our ambition is to deliver a scheme that helps to address national and local electricity needs by providing a cost effective and renewable source of clean energy for current and future generations.

“Little Crow Solar Park would save annually 64,500 – 86,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. It would provide much-needed power supply into the local network to support the development of local business.

“And our proposal includes battery storage. Solar power can be stored through battery storage, enabling efficient distribution of generated power to the grid.”

The application for the Scunthorpe facility was submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for consideration by INRG SOLAR (Little Crow) Ltd on 4 December 2020 and accepted for examination on 23 December 2020.

Following examinations during which the public, statutory consultees and interested parties were given the opportunity to give evidence to the examining authority, recommendations were made to the Secretary of State on 05 January 2022.
