Yorkshire charity benefits from shipping legacy

A FOUNDATION set up by a Greek shipping magnate has donated £200,000 to a Yorkshire charity.

Eureka!, the Halifax science museum aimed at children, has been offered to help meet the costs of a new £2.9m gallery by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

Tom Warman, director of marketing and fundraising at Eureka!, said: “As with all our donors and supporters, we are hugely grateful to Stavros Niarchos for believing in our vision for this important gallery development.

“As a registered educational charity, Eureka! receives no government funding towards its gallery development, which is why donations such as these are highly valued and appreciated.”

At the height of his success, Stavros Niarchos had a fleet of more than 80 ships operating around the world and also established the biggest shipyard in the Mediterranean in Greece. The Monaco-based Foundation carrying his name was established in 1996 following his death.

Eureka! has raised £2.4m towards the £2.9m cost of modernising its gallery which explains how the human body works.
