Amco wins rail contract

ENGINEERING group Amco has won a £6m contract with Network Rail to repair an historic railway tunnel.
The Wakefield-based group will work on the 140-year old Bradway Tunnel, between Sheffield and Chesterfield.
Amco, which was acquired in a management buyout earlier this year backed by Yorkshire turnaround fund Endless, is a specialist engineering company with a focus on rail infrastructure, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering projects.
The contract will be undertaken by the company’s rail division, Amco Rail, which has recently carried out work for Network Rail on the Bramhope Tunnel in Leeds and the Severn Tunnel between Bristol and Wales.
David Jackson, managing director of Amco, commented: “Our longstanding credentials in the rail sector were vital to winning this contract. Despite the turbulence in the UK economy generally, we are seeing strong growth prospects across our rail and specialist engineering divisions relating to major infrastructure projects.”
The works on the Bradway Tunnel will include brickwork pressure pointing, drilling and compensation grouting, water management by resin injection, shaft drainage, rockbolting and a sprayed concrete tunnel lining.
The £9.4m buyout from stock market group Amco Corporation was by Mr Jackson and Ian Swire and included four businesses – Amalgamated Construction, Amco Drilling, Amco Plastics and Amco Developments which operate from headquarters in Wakefield and three key operational sites in Barnsley, Warrington and Wath upon Dearne.
Amco works throughout the UK and employs more than 730 people and is expected to achieve sales of £90m this year.
