Healthcare Innovation: Driver in NHS for greater innovation

THE recognised need to save money within the NHS is proving to be a motivating driver for greater innovation, according to a healthcare expert.
Dr John Connolly, medical leader for Horsforth-based healthcare technology firm TPP, said he believes that now there is constraint, people are very focused and they know their jobs can be on the line – people do want to find new ways of working.
“Decision makers have to find new ways to deliver within budget. They are seeing things working elsewhere and it does make a difference,” he said.

Mark Tock, business development manager for health and wellbeing at Sheffield Hallam University, said the university is working with companies to help them unlock the NHS cloud and present arguments for products that utilise that data.
“It is a very exciting time to be in the sector,” he said.
“Not just because of background noise of collaboration and cost savings.
“The sector is extremely diverse and fastpaced, providing limitless opportunities. We’ve been helping companies to realise their ideas, from developing neck braces for Motor Neurone Disease sufferers and miniature-sized inhalers for asthmatics, to advanced coatings for hip joints and hydrogels for treating degenerative spinal disc disease.”
