Businessman to buy Yorkshire Post HQ for student scheme

A well-known Yorkshire businessman is said to have bought the former Yorkshire Post HQ for a student flats scheme.

According Estates Gazette, David Newett has gone under offer to buy the landmark building on Wellington Street from Johnston Press for a reported £2m.

Mr Newett runs Stirling Investments, which bought the Thorpe Arch Grange section of Leeds United’s training ground in 2004, and he also co-founded Leeds-based private equity house Endless.

It is thought Mr Newett is looking to secure temporary consent for a car park to generate income before looking into the student scheme.

The offices on Wellington Street were the home of the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post for 42 years.

Johnston Press announced last year it was to move the two newspapers from the building – known for its concrete shell and iconic clock – to modern office block No 1 Leeds as it looked to save costs.
