In brief: Cartridge World urges businesses to stay green; Health warning for Yorkshire

ORGANISATIONS across Yorkshire are being urged to make health and safety a priority as statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reveal that in 2007-8 an estimated 2.8 million working days were lost in Yorkshire due to injury and ill health in the workplace – an average of 1.4 days per worker.

These statistics, which are in line with the figures for England as a whole, also reveal that during 2007/8 106,000 people in Yorkshire and Humber suffered from an illness which they believed was caused or made worse by work.

In 2007/08, there were 16 fatal injuries to workers in the region.

The number of injuries to workers in the region fell slightly during 2007/8 with 2,894 major injuries to employees and 10,908 injuries requiring over 3 days’ absence from work, compared with 2,983 and 11,342 in 1006/7.

A STUDY has revealed that consumers’ decisions are being formed by environmental issues as well as tighter purse strings.

Research conducted by ICM Omnibus for Cartridge World revealed that more than half of shoppers in Yorkshire will consider cost as well as ‘green’ credentials.

Mark Holland, general manager for Cartridge World is urging business leaders not to use the credit crunch as an excuse to delay making their business more environmentally-friendly.

He said: “With many companies feeling the economic slowdown, it’s all too easy to lose sight of the benefits of demonstrating clear environmental policies. But it doesn’t make good business sense to ignore the environment. Being green is not a fad – it’s essential. Yes, companies have to adapt to cope with the current credit crunch. But we will be coping with climate change far longer.”

Cartridge World has 33 franchises located across Yorkshire, and its UK headquarters and franchise support team are based in Harrogate.
