SPECIALIST intellectual property (IP) firm Virtuoso Legal has become an ACID (Anti Copying in Design) legal affiliate team.

With offices in both Yorkshire and London, Virtuoso Legal will be providing advice to those working in the creative industries that wish to know how to identify their IP rights and protect their work.

A not-for-profit, membership trade organisation, ACID aims to help designers in the UK understand IP law in relation to their IP rights, ultimately helping them to protect their ideas and creations.

As part of Virtuoso Legal’s involvement with ACID, Virtuoso Legal’s IP experts will be offering free initial advice to ACID members and prospective members, helping them to identify and secure their IP needs, as well as protect their most important assets.

Philip Partington, senior solicitor at Virtuoso Legal, said: “Sadly for many of the UK’s creatives, the story of David and Goliath rings too true. There are some 350,000 designers in the UK, most of which are SMEs, and we hear of so many cases where designs and work are ripped off by larger companies. In such instances, small design companies and independent creatives can feel powerless – but they can, and must, fight back.

“We’ve always been a nation of creatives and it’s vital we protect this industry and enable it to thrive not only in the UK but internationally too. The law is there to protect designers’ ideas, work, reputation and business – and together with ACID, we’re determined to help eradicate design theft.”

Ward Hadaway’s head of commercial Colin Hewitt and commercial litigation partner Elaine Chan travelled to Xi’an in Western China for the China-Shaanxi SME Cross-Border Investment and Trade Cooperation Conference.

The event saw delegates from around the world meet up with representatives of more than 600 companies across China to help forge new trade links.

The firm was invited to the event by Bank of China and among more than 50 delegates from the UK attending the conference.

Ms Chan said: “Xi’an is the permanent site for the Euro-Asia Economic Forum and an economic powerhouse in Western China with industries including engineering, aerospace, agriculture and in particular a thriving hi-tech sector.

“It is also the home town of the current Chinese President Xi Jinping and is recognised as an important location for overseas companies and investors.”

Ms has a range of experience working with businesses in China and those trading with China, including recently working on cases representing a UK household name retailer involving a product liability recovery from a Chinese supplier, and a major UK plumbing supplies company on a dispute with a Chinese manufacturer, both of which were successfully resolved.

During their time out in China, the Ward Hadaway delegation discussed potential opportunities with Chinese companies in a range of sectors including pharmaceuticals, engineering, agriculture, food production and textiles.
