Horbury wins education contracts

CONSTRUCTION specialist The Horbury Group has secured new contracts at three leading UK universities valued at £8.5m to add to its growing educational portfolio.

Horbury Building Systems (HBS) and MWS Joinery, two of the nine companies which make up the group, have been appointed to work on campus accommodation expansions in Leeds, York and Birmingham.

The projects, which are being developed at Leeds Metropolitan University’s Carnegie Village, York’s Goodricke College and Birmingham’s Aston University sites, will house more than 4,000 students between them.

Trevor Wragg, managing director of The Horbury Group, said: “These developments are massive regeneration projects for the cities in question as they will draw more students and visitors to the areas.

“It is testament to the expertise within our group that we have clinched these contracts and continue to be involved in crucial development projects on a national scale.”

The group has started work on a range of purpose-built student flats at Leeds Metropolitan University, which is scheduled to finish in autumn.

The accommodation, which is being developed by Shepherd Construction, is based at the Headingley Campus and consists of luxury town houses, studio and cluster flats to house the city’s students. Work being conducted by Horbury Building Systems includes partitioning, plastering and ceilings.

The new Goodricke College at the University of York project will provide accommodation for more than 600 students and several learning departments. The development, will be situated on the new £500m Heslington East campus in the city.

HBS will undertake work on partitions and ceiling, whilst MWS will conduct general joinery, ironmongery and external Cedar cladding on the project.

And the most financially valuable of the three contracts, worth £4.6m to HBS and MWS, will see the group lend its expertise to phase one of a £214m development at Aston University campus, Birmingham.

Due for completion in 2014, the transformation of the university campus has been designed with the environment in mind, using the latest energy-efficient materials and cutting edge features such as green roofs and wind turbines.

The Horbury Group recently moved into a new £5.5m headquarters in Moorgate, Rotherham.
