Spotlight on India and China shines on opportunities for region’s businesses

A GROUP of top international trade specialists are visiting the region today to highlight the financial and professional business opportunities available in China and India.

The roadshow in Leeds, organised by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), will provide regional businesses with the best routes to success in both markets and tips to overcome obstacles.

In a series of presentations and workshops, delegates will find out what financial and professional services and products India and China want to buy, listen to experienced sector specialists, hear from financial and professional services SMEs already trading successfully in India and China, and benefit from one-to-one meetings with professionals based in these markets.

Trade and Investment Minister Lord Green said: “These two economies are experiencing exceptionally strong growth in this sector, which is creating a market for financial and investment products and a wealth of opportunities for British firms – and firms not just in London but in all parts of the country.

“The event in Leeds gives companies, specifically SMEs in this sector, a chance to learn from market experts about the growing business opportunities in China and India, the challenges they may face there, and the practical help available from UKTI to overcome them.”

Keynote speakers at the event include Mark Robson, UKTI regional director for Yorkshire and Humber, Howard Kew, chief executive of Financial Leeds, Gerry Grimstone, chairman of Standard Life and Financial Services, India Champion, UKTI, and David Wootton, corporate partner at Allen & Overy.

Mr Robson said: “Most people are well aware that China and India are experiencing unprecedented economic growth.  What is perhaps less well understood is the scale of the change now underway.

“We forecast that their share of global GDP will grow from 13% in 2010 to 33% in 2030, or more than the EU or US economies combined.  That has extraordinary implications for every British exporter.”

Other speakers include James Love, head of James Love Legal in Harrogate, Hugh Sherrard-Smith, partner at Appleyard Lees trademark and patent attorneys in Halifax, Dominic Ward, partner at Andrew Jackson lawyers in Hull, and Giles Blackburne, director of China-Britain Business Council Yorkshire.
