Jobs website recruits Lord Haskins

LORD Haskins, the former chairman of Northern Foods has taken the helm at recruitment website Graduates Yorkshire.

The veteran businessman, farmer and UK government adviser, has been named as the new chairman of the dedicated website for matching the region's employers with the best graduate talent.

As the former chief executive and chairman of Northern Foods, Lord Haskins has made a huge contribution to the Yorkshire region as a board member of Yorkshire Forward and to national Government through membership of many committees, and as the Rural Recovery Co-ordinator.

Operating in partnership with the region's 10 university careers services, Graduates Yorkshire offers a range of recruitment-based services to provide all the information and support that graduates and employers need to find each other.

In addition to providing all the benefits of a large jobsite, Graduates Yorkshire also offers a number of services that are delivered locally by the region's universities. The organisation has more than 13,000 graduates registered to the website and has managed more than 24,000 vacancies in the region.

Lord Haskins said: “One of the region's greatest assets is its student cohort and it is important that we match up that talent to meet the needs of the region's employers. Graduates Yorkshire has proved to be an excellent conduit in ensuring that we retain the graduates from Yorkshire's universities who can make a major contribution to our economic growth.”

Christopher Haskins, 70, was born in Dublin, the son of a farmer. After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, with a degree in history in 1959, Lord Haskins joined Northern Foods in 1962, becoming chairman in 1986, then non-executive chairman in 1998. The Leeds-based company is one of the leading chilled food and grocery manufacturers in the UK with a turnover of £1.3bn.

In 1995, he was an adviser to the then Conservative Government on Common Agricultural Policy reform and also a member of the UK Government's round table on Sustainable Development. Lord Haskins became a Labour life peer in 1998.

Martin Edmondson, Graduates Yorkshire chief executive, said: “Lord Haskins brings a wealth of experience to Graduates Yorkshire. He has a keen interest in higher education and his business credentials are impeccable. We value his contribution greatly.”

Graduates Yorkshire is funded by Yorkshire Forward and its roots go back to the launch of Graduate Link in 1996 to provide a recruitment service to meet the growing demand for graduates in SMEs.

Now known as Graduates Yorkshire, the organisation works with companies of all sizes to help them recruit graduates.

As well as carrying job advertising the organisation operates a searchable CV database; a CV matching service and bespoke recruitment packages including account management and micro-sites.

Advertisements on the site cost from £50 for a month for employers and it is free for candidates to list their CVs.
