Major scheme takes big step forward

THE developer for a multi-million pound scheme which will bring jobs and new homes in Yorkshire has been named.

Genr8 Developments has been selected by Calderdale Council’s cabinet committee as the preferred developer for the scheme at Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire.

The scheme, part of Yorkshire Forward’s Upper Calder Valley Renaissance programme, will deliver around 200 homes and business units to house small to medium sized businesses.

The scheme is expected to create around 660 new jobs.

Regeneration specialist GVA Grimley has advised the project team on the development of the site.

The scheme will open up the riverside and improve pedestrian access to Sowerby Bridge Railway station.

Additional elements include developing a wildlife corridor and nature reserve, new canal and riverside walks and providing vehicle access to allow for development at the south of the site.

Eve Fawcett, development director at GVA Grimley, said: “This is a great project which will deliver genuine regeneration benefits to Sowerby Bridge. Both parties have worked hard to respond to the difficult economic conditions without compromising the vision or quality of the scheme.

“GVA Grimley has provided detailed feasibility and procurement advice to Yorkshire Forward and Calderdale Council while co-ordinating a multi-disciplinary team and engaging with key stakeholders.

“We’re confident that Genr8 will deliver a stunning mixed-use scheme which will bring unprecedented benefits to Sowerby Bridge residents and visitors.”

Councillor Amanda Byrne, Calderdale Council’s portfolio holder for regeneration and development, said: “This is a really exciting development that could create up to 660 jobs, 200 family homes and £63m of investment.

“A lot of work has been done with the local community and they have been able to influence how the development has progressed. This consultation will continue as the developer creates a masterplan for the site.

“The sustainable economic development of the district is a key priority for Calderdale Council and this scheme will help us achieve that. The development will not only be a key economic contributor to Calderdale but also to the Leeds City Region.”

The proposals have been developed following an extensive community liaison campaign including consultation with more than 2,000 local residents, schools, Calderdale College and local interest groups.
