£25,000 prize boost to pioneering tech firm

A LEADING Yorkshire technology company has been given a boost after winning a government run research competition.

Barnsley-based AIDC European Centre of Excellence was awarded the money by the Technology Strategy Board to carry out research into a new system to offer users with disabilities improved access to public service information.

The competition forms part of the Government’s ‘Digital Britain’ programme, which looks to develop new applications, services and business models that make best use of a new digital infrastructure in the UK.

Since launching in 2007, AIDC has developed an international reputation as a leader in automatic identification and data capture.

It advises businesses across the region on the best applications such as barcodes, 2D codes, RFID, smartcards and biometrics.

The company recently relocated from Halifax to the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley to become part of the Digital Region developments in South Yorkshire.

Digital Region is the first major regional deployment of superfast broadband in the UK to bring improved access to a range of entertainment, business and public sector services and attracting new investment and jobs to the region.
Forward and will provide superfast broadband to 1.3m people, 540,000 homes and 40,000 businesses across the region.
