Big names to tee off at golf centre’s Senior Masters tour

Big names from the golfing world will descend on Leeds Golf Centre this summer to tee off in the Leeds Senior Masters Tour, an event for golfing professionals over the age of 48.

The three-day event will take place between May 30 and June 1, with the Pro-Am taking place on the first day. It’s the first-time Leeds has played host to such a high-key professional event since the Ryder Cup reunion in 2009.

The Senior Masters Tour is the home of regular tournaments for golf professionals and aims to help and promote the senior professional circuit outside of the European Senior Tour.

Well-known names from the golfing world including Andrew Oldcorn, Paul Wesselingh, Peter Baker, Gordon J Brand, Gary Wolstenholme and Bob Cameron have already confirmed they are playing and the aim is to create a full field of 72 for the main event.

The event has been created by Nigel Sweet, operations manager at Leeds Golf Centre, who joined the senior circuit for the first time in 2016 after playing the game for 38 years.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Leeds Golf Centre will play host in what will be the biggest event outside the European Seniors Tour.

“The reason for us creating this event is to provide senior golfers with the opportunity to play competitive golf in a full field, the European Seniors Tour only allows a 54-strong field. I know from playing on the Senior Masters Tour there is a still a huge appetite for playing against a 72-man field. This event will promise a huge prize pot, currently standing at £25,000, and we’re keen to make this an annual fixture in the Senior Tour calendar.

“We’re sure this event will capture the imagination of our fantastic golfing community here in Leeds and we look forward to welcoming the players and spectators.
