Contractor appointed on multi-million pound North Yorkshire hospital redevelopment scheme
A contractor has been appointed on an £11.9m redevelopment scheme at Whitby Hospital.
The NHS Property Services (NHSPS) has picked BAM Construction to deliver the scheme for Hambleton, Richmond and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group.
It was announced last week that funds are now secured to progress the plans through to full business case and approval by its governing body.
BAM operates across the UK and its regional office is based in Leeds. It has a track record in delivering major hospital schemes as well as complex buildings in other sectors.
Paul Cleminson, BAM’s construction director, said:
“Hospitals are complex buildings. The ProCure22 framework is an excellent way to tender major capital works because it allows early engagement for all the key partners to price it more completely and to identify and minimise the risks. It also means we form partnerships at the outset. That is a beneficial way to proceed when delivering something as much needed and important to local people as these new facilities are.”
Health sector designers Medical Architecture will partner BAM to carry out a full detailed technical design to allow the scheme to go to planning. The two companies have worked together on previous healthcare schemes.
Dr George Campbell, local GP and CCG Governing Body member said: “After receiving confirmation of the funding from the Department of Health and Social Care via NHS Property Services, we’re relieved to have reached this milestone in what is a very technical project. “Whitby Hospital is an essential part of Whitby and the surrounding area and we fully intend on working with our partners to ensure this remains at the heart of the community with modern, sustainable and quality services and facilities.”
BAM has recently commenced work on a cardiac hybrid theatre and inter-operative MRI facility for Leeds Children’s Hospital.
Last year it handed over a critical care unit and other works to Bradford Royal Infirmary while across the Pennines, it also delivered a suite of new critical care buildings for Aintree Hospital.
