Green light for cinema at retail and leisure development

Cineworld, one of the key occupiers in The Glass Works, the retail and leisure development in Barnsley town centre, has successfully had its licence approved by Barnsley Council.

The cinema giant has signed a 20-year lease to deliver a state-of-the-art 13 screen multiplex that will adjoin the new public square.

The approved licence will allow them to showcase the latest films, plays, dance shows and live music. The venue will also be able to serve refreshments seven days a week, with beers and wines permitted between 11am and 2am.

Kevin Frost, property director at Cineworld, said: “We are delighted to be bringing Cineworld to The Glass Works. Getting the licence agreed was the final step in making it happen and now we can look forward to welcoming local cinemagoers to enjoy our unique leisure experience.

“This modern development scheme is changing the face of Barnsley town centre and really lends itself to one of our next generation multiplex cinemas. The venue will boast 13 theatres with over 2,000 seats, including a full height 450 seat Super Screen. It will feature the very latest digital surround sound systems with curved wall to wall, floor to ceiling screens, stadia seating and plenty of leg room.”

The Glass Works is the 3.8-hectare, £130m development scheme funded by Barnsley Council.

Construction has already started on the initial phase of the scheme, which includes the new Library @ the Lightbox and a transformation of the Metropolitan Centre, which will provide a brand-new home for the town’s famous markets.

The second stage of the development, which includes Cineworld, Superbowl UK, 26 shopping units and 7 family-friendly restaurants, will begin later this year, with Barnsley Council and development managers Queensberry working towards a completion date of 2020.
