Weekender: BBC MasterChef set to re-open popular Leeds restaurant today

Yorkshire chef Matt Healy, who was runner-up in BBC’s MasterChef: The Professionals, will today open the doors at the refurbished Grade Two listed Leeds restaurant he acquired in March.

Horsforth-born Healy bought The Foundry in Holbeck and since then the restaurant has undergone refurbishment. Re-opening as ‘Matt Healy at The Foundry,’ he said the aesthetic remained true to The Foundry’s past while bringing it up to date with a modern finish.

Healy, who shot to fame in 2016 when he was runner-up in the professional version of the BBC cooking programme, said that the dishes he has planned would boast the best of seasonal British produce – simple dishes, many with five ingredients at most, packed with flavour.

The official re-opening to the public today follows a two-week refurbishment of the Grade II listed building.

Healy, who is also head chef at his new restaurant, said: “We’ve put in so much hard work behind the scenes these past few months, and we’re so excited to open the doors to the people of Leeds – just in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.

“We’ve created a menu of simple food with big flavours. There’s a selection of small plates plus larger dishes and amazing puds, and we’ll be offering a Sunday roast that I’m proud to put my name to. We can’t wait to see you there.”

The menu will include:

  • Warm sourdough with Pedro Ximenez balsamic vinegar
  • Cecina smoked and cured with truffle oil
  • Asparagus with wild garlic, peas, and duck egg
  • Hand-cut beef tartare, yolk, and blue cheese and onion toastie
  • Baby chicken Kiev with wild garlic and duck fat potato
  • Hake with confit fennel and charred clementine puree
  • Crème brûlée doughnut

This week, TheBusinessDesk.com sampled dishes at the new venue, which still has its classic design but a very clean-cut and temporary edge. This included a tasty main course of baby chicken kiev with chicken leg, chicken bon bon and duck fat fondant potato and delicious sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. Very much recommended!
