A property firm is seeking to build student accommodation with up to 450 units on the site of the former Shepherd Construction’s headquarters in York.

Summix is looking to demolish the old office block Frederick House off Fulford Road, which is next door to York police station, and build accommodation for up to 450 students.

The firm has launched a consultation on the future of the two-acre site, which it bought the site earlier this year. It is looking to construct buildings between two and five storeys.

Summix said: “The regeneration of the two-acre site will result in the demolition of the existing Frederick House building and replace it with new buildings providing modern, sustainable student accommodation with the introduction of significant planting and soft landscaping. The Guard House building, at the front of the site, will be retained and refurbished into a reception and amenity building, including shared study spaces and social kitchen and dining facilities. ”

It will be a largely car-free development, with provision for dropping off and picking up.

A spokesperson from Summix added: “We would encourage as many people as possible to take part in the consultation process so the plans can be refined and improved before a formal planning application is submitted.

“The Frederick House site will be transformed into high quality student accommodation that will have 24-hour security and management.  The aim is to sympathetically redevelop and rejuvenate this site to create a high quality living environment that is sustainable.”

A public exhibition will be held at Frederick House on the Wednesday 7 November between 3pm and 8pm.
