Hull College received £34m in government grants to restructure last year

Hull College last year received £34m in government grants to restructure the organisation.

The college has appeared top of a national list of colleges which shows how much each received from the government in loans and grants.

According to documents released by the Exceptional Financial Support and Restructuring Funding (ESFA) and analysed by FE Week, a total of 34 colleges across the country received £270m in ESFA loans and grants by July 2018.

The documents revealed Hull College received the biggest amount in restructuring grants – a total of £34,187,000 – to support its ‘fresh start’ arrangement and to help its “significant financial and operational turnaround”.

A spokesperson from Hull College Group said: “Hull College Group is committed to providing its 26,000 students with the best education. The restructuring  grant is supporting the colleges’ five-year, fresh start strategy, which will provide a sustainable and stable future.”

FE Week had previously reported that the college received a £54m government bailout in order to balance the books, which was believed to be the highest ever given to an English college.

In March last year, the college said 230 jobs were at risk due to teh restructure.

Also appearing on the national list is Kirkelees College, which received a £2.8m loan from the body.
