Plans submitted for 65 apartments on disused city site

Disused land in York could accommodate a five-storey apartment block if planners give the go-ahead.
The proposals from Tiger Developments are for 65 apartments on a 0.5-acre site off Eboracum Way. The scheme would include a total of 38 one-bedroom, 21 two-bedroom and six three-bedroom apartments.
A detailed design and access statement accompanying the application explains the facade will mainly be made out of red brick, and the property will have 22 car parking spaces in a basement car park. There would also be provision for cycle parking, while vehicle access would be off Eboracum Way.
The statement adds: “The proposal will create a cohesive and sustainable development for a vacant brownfield site. It will also provide a significant contribution to the council’s local housing supply and provide a policy compliant level of affordable housing.
“The scheme will provide a high quality of architecture and residential accommodation on a key junction site.”
A 20% proportion of the apartments would be affordable – which equates to 13 units.
A separate planning statement, also submitted as part of the same plans, says the land earmarked for the apartments had been part of a gasworks and has been vacant for more than 30 years.
It adds: “It is recognised that the local area is undergoing significant change and regeneration from former industrial and commercial related uses to new residential and student led accommodation alongside supporting facilities and uses.
“In recent years, a number of proposals for residential and student accommodation have been granted permission along with new hotel and leisure uses such as the gym at 10 Layerthorpe. This important corner site has been recognised as playing a significant role in the continued regeneration of the local area.
“It is confirmed that the application site is not located within or near a conservation area or any statutory listed buildings.”
