145-bed hotel planned for city’s former tax office site

Plans have been unveiled to build a hotel on the site of Swinson House on Piccadilly, in York city centre.

The vacant former HMRC tax office will be replaced with a 145-bedroom Marriott Courtyard hotel.

These proposals will create between 50 and 70 full and part-time jobs during construction and operation as well as providing significant investment into the city.

The site is located within City of York Council’s Castle Gateway masterplan area, and the intended hotel is expected to improve the landscaping along Piccadilly.

A spokesman for the owners of the building, Dominvs Group, said: “The development will deliver a building of high-quality architecture, in keeping with its surroundings, and create a new destination through the introduction of a ground-floor restaurant & bar open to the public.”

The company is launching a public consultation to explain the plans in more detail and seek feedback on the proposals.

A public exhibition will be held on the 14th August, between 3pm and 7pm at Swinson House, 23 Piccadilly, where members of the development team will be on hand to answer questions.

Gareth Jackson, Planning Director for Dominvs Group, said: “These plans will replace the vacant office building, which has become outdated, with a new high quality hotel that will complement the wider area, meet demand, and fit with the vision of the wider Castle Gateway masterplan that City of York Council has put in place.

“We would encourage as many people as possible to come along and provide feedback, before proposals are finalised and a planning application is submitted.”
